The Mohawk Valley Eagles won their third NCAC Boys Tournament Crown by defeating the River Valley Royals 64-53 Wednesday night at Rome, NY.  The two teams had split their regular season meetings each winning on the road, and earned the right to face each other for the league championship by winning their semifinal matches on Tuesday.

The Eagles saw all 5 starters score in the first quarter to jump out to the 15-8 lead then River Valley outscored them 13-8 in the second quarter to cut the lead to two at halftime 23-21.  The Royals kept within striking distance for the first few minutes of the third period and pulled ahead by one point on a shot by Ben Moser.  But Bruce Pavlus answered right back with a score of his own and followed it up with a 3 point goal on the next possession.  The lead held at 3 after the 3rd period.  The Eagles then went on a 6-0 run capped by a backdoor cut by Josh Purpura for the lay in.  Lucas Widrick scored 8 of his 10 points in the final period to keep it close but threes by David Haas and Bill Arthur down the stretch kept the game out of reach. With 2:51 to play and the Eagles up 57-48, River Valley forced two straight turnovers.  Ben Moser was put on the foul line and hit both free throws then scored on a slashing drive to the basket on the next possession to narrow the lead to 57-52.  The Eagles widened the gap once again when David Haas found a cutting Mike Gorman in the lane who made the shot and was fouled on the play.  Gorman hit the free throw and the Eagles led 60-52 with less than a minute left to play.  Forced to foul, River Valley put Bruce Pavlus on the line who calmly hit both ends of the one and one.  Ben Moser was then fouled on the inbounds pass and hit one of two.  With less than 12 seconds to play, David Haas was fouled and hit both free throws for the final 64-53 score.

Bruce Pavlus led a balanced Eagle attack with 16 points.  David Haas had 15 while Josh Purpura and Bill Arthur added 12 and 10 points respectively.  Ben Moser led all scorers with 19 points while Tanner Zehr added 12 and Lucas Widrick 10.

The New York State School for the Deaf Trojanettes won their third straight NCAC Girls Title with a 50-46 victory over Mohawk Valley Christian Academy.  The Trojanettes got off to a quick start scoring the first 10 points of the game.  The Eagles finally settled down and on 5 first quarter points by Marissa Shepherd closed the gap to 12-9 by the end of the first period. NYSSD came out strong again in the second period scoring the first 7 points and built up 27-13 halftime lead.  Kaitlyn Schwabrow had 7 of her 13 points in the second period for the Trojanettes.  The Eagles came out in a zone press to start the second half and slowly climbed back.  With all 5 starters scoring in the third period, the Eagles cut the lead to 8 going into the final period of play.  Once again NYSSD started the quarter strong scoring the first 6 points of the final quarter and expanded the lead to 14.  The Eagles got the margin cut to 10 with 3:10 to play, then a steal and pass up court to Marissa Shepherd resulted in a lay up and foul.  Marissa made the 3 point play to cut the lead to 7 with 2:36 to play.  On the next Eagle possession Mikayla Wintermute received the ball on the left baseline and her short jumper cut the lead to 5.  Cassandra Perry then passed over the defense to Shannon Kierpiec whose layup widened the margin to 7 once again.  With time running out Lissa Keiper hit a 3 pointer but Kierpiec scored again on the other end to keep the margin at 6.  Mohawk Valley would score again on a buzzer beater by Sarah Shepherd but would fall for the second straight year in the finals to NYSSD.  Shannon Kiepiec was the high scorer with 22 points as Kaitlyn Schwabrow added 13.  The Eagles were led by Marissa Shepherd with 15 points, Lissa Keiper with 11 and Jena Allen with 10 points.
