Game Summary: 4th seed Mohawk Valley Christian Academy nearly pulled off the upset win Tuesday night in Rome, NY in the semifinal round of the NCAC League Boys Basketball Tournament. The first half saw several lead changes with Bruce Pavlus’ buzzer beating 3 pointer at the end of the 2nd quarter giving the Eagles the one point lead at halftime. Midway through the 3rd period the upset minded Eagles extended the lead to 8 behind 6 straight points from Josh Purpura and took a 6 point lead into the final period. New Life chipped away at the lead and knotted the game at 48-48 on a baseline drive by Paul Brown with 2:52 remaining. The Warriors finally regained the lead 54-52 when Paul Brown stole an errant pass and raced up the court for the lay in. With 1:07 remaining, David Haas drove the left side of the lane hitting a 4 foot jumper and was fouled on the play. He converted the free throw to give the Eagles the 55-54 margin. On the ensuing possession, Jared Houseman was blocked by Bruce Pavlus under the basket. New Life grabbed the loose ball and fed it right back to Houseman who was fouled on the shot attempt. With 38 seconds to play, Houseman hit one out of two and the game was tied 55-55. Bruce Pavlus missed a contested shot for the Eagles next possession and Brown grabbed the rebound and called time out. New Life set up a final play. After running down the clock, Travis Lyon took the ball in the right corner, drove towards the lane and made a perfect shovel pass to Houseman who layed it in for the score with 5 seconds to play. Mike Gorman’s desperation three fell short and New Life won the game advancing to the final game against River Valley. Jared Houseman led all scorers with 25 points while front court mate Paul Brown added 10. David Haas led the Eagles with 19 points as Bruce Pavlus chipped in 14.
