Game Summary: The Mohawk Valley Christian Academy Eagles staged a dramatic comeback to win the NYSIL State Championship game 60-54 in overtime Saturday afternoon at Davis College in Johnson City, NY. Representing the NCAC, the Eagles entered the 8 team field as the 6th overall seed earning the right to play in the final game with wins over Cortland Christian Academy on Thursday and the Elmira Defenders on Friday. Their opponent would be the Binghamton Blaze, defending champions of the NYSIL. Mohawk Valley got off to a slow start falling behind 7-0 before Bruce Pavlus’ jumper in the lane got them on the scoreboard. Last years tournament MVP Nathan Rittenburg came out strong scoring 9 points in the first period and teammate Ryan Knox added 7 as the front court dominated the smaller Eagles in the first quarter. Two three pointers by David Haas and one by Joshua Purpura kept the Eagles close to wind out the first quarter 19-14. The frontcourt of Rittenburg, Knox and Steven Peterson kept pouring it on scoring all of Binghamton’s 18 second quarter points as the Blaze extended their lead to 37-21 with 3 minutes to play in the first half. Rittenburg picked up his third foul midway through the 2nd period and surprisingly stayed in the game. A double foul in the post resulted in Rittenburg’s 4th personal foul and he left the game with less than a minute to go in the half. Mike Gorman’s layup and a Joshua Purpura three pointer at the buzzer helped the Eagles narrow the lead to 37-24 at halftime. With Rittenburg on the bench to start the third quarter, and a rejuvenated defense, the Eagles chipped away at the lead. All 5 starters scored in the 3rd period as Mohawk Valley outscored Binghamton by 8 in the period and narrowed the gap to 43-38 after three. The 6’4” Blaze center checked back into the game to start the 4th period but managed only two points as a putback by Bruce Pavlus and a 3 pointer by David Haas narrowed the gap to 3. With just under 4 minutes gone in the period, Nathan Rittenburg drove the right baseline. Mike Gorman dropped over from the weak side and planted himself to take the charge that resulted in Rittenberg’s 5th personal foul. Behind 45-43, Haas hit Bruce Pavlus cutting across the lane whose spinning layup tied the score at 45-45 with 3:01 left to play. The defense held the next two Blaze possessions but the Eagles failed to score as well. Then with under two minutes to play, Bill Arthur found David Purpura on the left baseline whose fade away jumper swished through the basket to give the Eagles their first lead of the game, 47-45. Binghamton’s Bradley Ellis was fouled on the next possession behind the arc and hit all three of his free throws to put the Blaze up 48-47. David Haas’ three point attempt rimmed out on the next Eagle possession, and the Eagles then fouled Nathan Florozykowski, who hit one of two to put the Blaze up by two 49-47. A steal by Billy Arthur resulted in a layup and foul and the Eagles were up 50-49 on the three point play. With 18 seconds to play, down by 1, the Blaze’s Ellis shot a well guarded three pointer which missed the mark, but Mohawk Valley could not control the rebound and the Blaze took the ball out under their basket with 11 seconds remaining. Ellis drove the left side of the court and flipped up a floater that caromed off the front of the rim. Ryan Knox grabbed the rebound and was fouled. With the one-and-one situation, he hit the first to tie the score 50-50, but missed on his second attempt. Arthur’s last second heave down court was no good and the teams went into overtime. Bill Arthur scored 9 of his 22 points in the OT period and got the Eagles off to a 55-50 lead with a two pointer off a long rebound, then an open look at a three pointer which he made. Steven Patterson put back a missed shot to pull within 3 but Arthur converted a shot again to keep the margin at 5. With time running out, the Blaze were forced to foul. Josh Purpura hit 1 of 2 and Bill Arthur 2 of 2 from the line to seal the victory for the Eagles. Mohawk Valley was led by Bill Arthur with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. David Haas added 11 points while Josh Purpura and Bruce Pavlus each had 9 apiece and Purpura also added 8 rebounds. Ryan Knox led the Blaze with 22 points and Nathan Rittenburg added 19. Bill Arthur’s heroics in the final minutes of the game and the overtime period earned him the game’s MVP award. Both Arthur and David Haas participated in the NYSIL All Star game later that evening.

Game Notes: Mohawk Valley’s come back effort fell short on Friday night as the Hudson Valley Rocks defeated the home team 35-32. Hudson Valley took the opening tap and scored on a layup to take the lead and never looked back leading 10-6 after the first quarter. A full court press baffled the Eagles who managed only 2 points in the second period falling behind 20-8 at the half. The margin held after three periods with Hudson Valley leading 30-18 going into the final period. The Eagles offense came to life with 6 different players scoring in the final period to bring the game within 3 points. After holding the visitors in their final two possessions, the Eagles worked the ball around with 24 seconds left to play, found Lissa Keiper spotted up at the top of the arc, but her three point attempt to tie the game caught the front of the rim. Hudson Valley grabbed the rebound and secured the win on the road. Christiana Johnson and Shannon O’Leary led the Rocks with 13 and 12 points respectively. The balanced Eagles offense was led by Marissa Shepherd with 8 points and Rachel Hall with 7. The Lady Eagles will prepare for the NCAC tournament on March 4th and 5th where they will enter as the #1 seed.
