The Mohawk Valley Eagles faced the
Messiah Academy Falcons in the NCAC Tournament finals Tuesday night in
Rome, NY. Mohawk Valley won both regular season meetings by narrow
margins or 3 and 4 and it looked like another close game was in store in
the first half. The Eagles jumped out to a 8-0 lead behind 6 points by
Marissa Shepard, but Messiah battled back to cut the lead to 4 by the
end of the first quarter. Messiah would then outscore Mohawk Valley 8-6
in the second quarter to stay close 18-16 at halftime. The Eagles then
came out in a modified trapping press in the 3rd quarter and
held Messiah to just 5 points in the period building up a 31-21 lead by
the end of the third quarter. A strong 4th quarter with
Marissa Shepard and Rachel Hall each scoring 6 points allowed the Eagles
to widen the gap to 21 by the end of the game. The third time was a
charm for the Mohawk Valley girls who lost the two previous years to
NYSSD Trojanettes in the NCAC finals, winning their first ever
tournament. Marissa Shepard led the Eagles with 20 points and 10
rebounds, while Rachel Hall and Mikayla Wintermute chipped in with 12
and 10 points respectively. Messiah Academy was led by Danielle
McHarris with 7 and Jacki Arthur and Jordynn Varano with 6 each.
