CHAMPIONSHIP GAME - Thursday, June 1, 2006
Rome, NY - The first annual
NCAC Co-ed Softball Championship Game saw undefeated MVCA face the
Crusaders of Holy Cross Academy on a rainy afternoon. The Crusaders
jumped out to the early lead when Dan Maciag hit a towering home run
over the right field fence with a runner on to give the Crusaders the
early 2 run lead. The Eagles managed only one run over the first three
innings as the upset minded Crusaders played tough defense. Coming to
bat in the bottom of the 4th inning the Eagles bats started to come
alive. Bruce Pavlus started the inning with a single and Chris Chaput
moved him to second on a long sacrifice fly to deep right center field.
Then Gary Van Nostrand drove the first pitch up the left field line for
a triple. David Haas drove in the go ahead run with a double. After Jena
Allen reached 1st on a dribbler back to the pitcher, Scott Masi follwed
with a liner to the shortstop whose throw went wide at first base. Haas
scored on the play. Kristi Masi and Ethan Hovart then followed with
consecutive singles before Holy Cross retired the final two batters.
Trailing 6-2 Holy Cross managed only two base runners the rest of the
game. The Eagles put up an insurance run in the 6th inning on Scott
Masi's single as the rains came down. The Eagles won the game 7-2 to
take the NCAC's first ever Co-ed Softball trophy.
