Game Summary: The meeting between the
top two teams in the North Country
Athletic Conference lived up to its
billing with the River Valley Royals
holding on to win 51-48 Thursday night
in Herkimer. The Eagles got off to a
slow start as the tough River Valley
defense held them to 7 for 24 shooting
in the first half. Lucas Widrick scored
9 of his game high 20 points in the
second period to give the visiting
Royals a 24-16 halftime lead. River
Valley came out strong in the third
period scoring 20 points to swell their
lead to 12 going into the final period.
With Senior point guard Tanner Zehr
sidelined with an injury, the Eagles
tightened up their defense, holding the
Royals to only 2 points over the first 7
minutes of the final quarter while
scoring 13 points. Mike Gorman and Bill
Arthur combined for 10 of those 13
points as the Eagles pulled to within
one. With 51 seconds to play, David
Haas’s spinning layup on the right lane
put the Eagles ahead for the first time
since the beginning basket 48-47. On
the next possession Greg Paine drove to
the lane and hit a 12 foot bank shot
over the outstretched arm of Josh
Purpura ending River Valley’s scoring
drought and giving the Royals a 49-48
lead with 24 seconds to play. On the
Eagles next possession Ben Moser came
from the weak side to tip away the entry
pass then saved it from going out of
bounds to his teammate. Forced to foul,
the Eagles put Lucas Widrick on the line
who calmly hit both ends of the
one-and-one with 7 seconds remaining. A
final shot at the buzzer fell short and
River Valley remained undefeated.
Widrick was the high scorer for the
Royals with 20 while Ben Moser added
10. Mike Gorman led the Eagles with 16
while David Haas added 15.
