Game Summary: NYSSD jumped out to an early 9-6 lead Thursday night before relinquishing the lead to the Eagles 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. Bruce Pavlus scored 9 points in the second quarter to swell the lead to 36-26 at the half. The Trojans cut briefly into the Eagles lead in the 3rd period before David Haas erupted for 14 points, swelling MVCA’s lead to 25. Irick Carter and Elijah Olivo each scored 12 a piece for the Trojans in the final quarter but their run fell short as the Eagles converted 13 of 17 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Haas scored 22 for the Eagles while Bruce Pavlus and Josh Purpura chipped in 15 and 14 respectively. Elijah Olivo led the Trojans with 22 while Carter added 21 in their first loss of the season. MVCA will be home Tuesday for a game with Faith Fellowship.

Game Notes: The Mohawk Valley girls basketball team opened their season against the NYSSD Trojanettes, winner of the last two NCAC girls titles. The Eagles stayed close through the first quarter and a half, but a 6-0 run to end the 2nd quarter put the Trojanettes up by 8 at the half. After exchanging baskets to start the 3rd quarter, the Eagles scored 6 straight points to pull within 2 points. But NYSSD answered with a 6-0 run of their own and swelled the lead to 10 going into the final period. Brittany Bruce and reserve guard Amanda Miller combined for 10 in the final period to keep the game safely out of reach and record their third straight victory of the season. Three players had 8 a piece for NYSSD while Eagle guard Lisa Keiper led all scorers with 10.
